The four-box method
For every room, work with four categories: keep, store, sell or donate, and bin. Touch each item once and decide immediately — hesitation is how clutter survives.
Room by room
- Kitchen: clear expired food, duplicate gadgets and rarely-used appliances
- Bedrooms: thin wardrobes to what fits and is worn this season
- Living room: limit surfaces to a few loved items; box the rest
- Garage and loft: the usual clutter graveyards — be ruthless
Where storage fits in
The 'store' box is what makes decluttering stick. Instead of agonising over keepsakes, seasonals and 'maybe one day' items, move them into storage and revisit them with fresh eyes in a few months.
Keep it that way
Adopt a 'one in, one out' rule and schedule a quarterly mini-declutter. A home that's easy to reset stays calm for years.
The trick: decluttering is easier with a holding pen. Storage lets you decide calmly instead of in a moving-day panic.
