Choose the right boxes
Use uniform, double-walled boxes in two sizes — large for light items, small for heavy ones. Avoid supermarket cast-offs: they crush when stacked and split when lifted.
Wrap and protect
- Wrap fragile items individually in bubble wrap or packing paper
- Protect furniture corners and legs with blankets or cardboard
- Bag liquids separately to avoid spills ruining a whole box
- Vacuum-seal soft items like bedding and clothing to save space
Label everything
Label every box on two sides and the top — room, contents and 'fragile' where needed. Keep a simple inventory list so you know what's where without opening every box.
Pack for access
Put items you'll need soonest near the door. Stack heavy boxes at the bottom and lighter ones on top, and leave a narrow aisle if you'll visit often.
Fragile items
Use dish-barrel boxes for crockery, pack plates vertically (not flat), and fill gaps with scrunched paper so nothing shifts in transit.
Top tip: An extra ten minutes labelling well saves hours of rummaging later. Pack for the you who'll be looking for things in three months.
